The Design Philosophy
Why the Argon 3LX Exists
Rather than compromise performance or quietly increase the price of the Argon 3LS, Amphion chose to move the design forward. The Argon 3LX benefits from engineering advances developed across Amphion’s professional and X-Series loudspeakers, resulting in improved timing, integration, and transparency while preserving the musical character that made the 3LS so widely respected.
Calling it a new model was intentional — the improvements are audible, measurable, and fundamental.
5th-Generation Waveguide: Wide Sweet Spot, Precise Imaging
A defining element of the Argon 3LX is Amphion’s 5th-Generation Waveguide, which shapes and controls the sound field for exceptionally even dispersion.
This design:
-
Maintains consistent tonal balance across a wider listening area
-
Reduces room-induced coloration
-
Preserves image stability even off-axis
The result is a larger, more forgiving sweet spot than most conventional loudspeakers, allowing multiple listeners to enjoy the same coherent soundstage.
X-Series Crossover & Time Alignment
At the heart of the Argon 3LX is Amphion’s X-Series crossover, operating at a carefully chosen 1600 Hz crossover point. This unusually low transition frequency allows the waveguide-loaded tweeter and mid-bass drivers to behave as a single acoustic source through the most critical vocal and imaging range.
Combined with Amphion’s time-aligned driver positioning, this yields:
-
Exceptionally smooth frequency response
-
Precise phase coherence
-
Pinpoint phantom center imaging
-
Seamless integration from bass through treble
These elements work together to create the “locked-in” spatial presentation Amphion is known for.
Performance: Studio Accuracy Meets Musical Grace
Amphion’s professional studio heritage is unmistakable. The Argon 3LX delivers honest, transparent sound that reveals detail and nuance without sounding clinical or fatiguing.
What consistently surprises listeners is how natural and emotionally engaging that accuracy feels. Vocals are lifelike, instruments occupy clearly defined space, and the speakers themselves seem to disappear — leaving only the performance.
Soundstage & Imaging
The Argon 3LX excels at creating a large, precisely focused three-dimensional soundstage. Thanks to the waveguide-controlled dispersion, low crossover point, and time-aligned drivers, images are stable, centered, and convincing.
Phantom center imaging is especially strong, making the 3LX an outstanding choice for two-channel systems where vocal realism and spatial accuracy matter most.
Bass: Controlled, Articulate, and Honest
As a compact floor-stander, the Argon 3LX delivers tight, well-controlled bass that integrates cleanly with the midrange. There is no artificial warmth or upper-bass emphasis — just accurate, rhythmically correct low-frequency support.
This restraint makes the 3LX especially well suited to smaller rooms, where excessive bass output often becomes a liability rather than an asset.
Value Proposition: 3LX vs 7LX
The Argon 3LX achieves approximately 90% of what the larger Argon 7LX can deliver, in a more compact floor-standing design that is easier to place and offered at a more accessible price point.
For listeners who value imaging precision, tonal balance, and musical truth — but don’t need the physical scale or output capability of the 7LX — the 3LX represents the sweet spot in the Argon lineup.
What They’re Saying (Early Impressions)
“Exceptionally precise imaging with a wide, immersive soundstage that remains stable even off-axis.”
“Studio-monitor clarity without dryness — detailed, honest, yet surprisingly warm and musical.”
“Seamless integration from top to bottom, with a smooth frequency response and convincing phantom center.”
“Elegant Scandinavian design paired with sound that prioritizes accuracy and emotional connection.”
“Sound can transport you to new emotional states. At best it can be true three-dimensional magic. The new Argons take that journey way deeper into the beauty of sound than their predecessors. On paper a tweeter update may not sound overly exciting, but the results are something magical.”
— Anssi Hyvönen, Founder, Amphion Loudspeakers
This first U.S. review of the Argon7LX confirms what Amphion’s professional users already know: the Argon 7LX delivers reference-level performance without exaggeration, and competes comfortably with loudspeakers costing significantly more.
