It’s my great pleasure to announce Mats Perrson of Washington DC as the winner of the Essence Fall 2019 Sweepstakes for a free Essence HDACC II-4K DAC / Preamp / Headphone Amp, with HDMI v2.0 for 4K and USB inputs, a $599 value. I know all of you join me in congratulating Mats and thanks to all who entered and didn’t win, better luck in the next Winter 2020 Sweepstakes that’s now on.
Here is Mats personal Audiophile Journey, you may notice some similarities to your own experiences as audiophiles, I know I do:
“My audiophile journey started with my dad playing classical on a turntable in the living room. He listened every day. I didn’t think it sounded good, but I developed an interest to listen. I was just starting high school. Got my first job – Saturday 6 am to 12 noon plus summers. 5 days a week. Spent every penny on stereo. Thorens 150; Sony TTS 3000 turntables; DIY amps – passive and active speakers, built speakers, horns etc. Nothing was constant.
Ten years later I decided it was time for stability and in my mind the DREAM system. Dream turned out to be Oracle Delphi, ET-2, Kiseki cartridge, Audio Research SP-10, Ray Lumley M-100 mono blocks; and a Belgian 4-way speaker – MP1. No CD – it was mid 80s and vinyl was the way. Spent my money on tweaks. Pumps and storage tank for ET-2; rebuilt the Lumley’s etc.
I never understood the true value of CD until later. For me it was hard – the CD format had new and better models every year. Tried Sansui and Rega player. None of them gave my turntable the slightest match. I continued to buy CD players, but it was not until around 2005, when I got a lead on buying a used Sony SCD-777ES with Richard Kern mods that I found the holy grail. I put a super clock into it and it was singing. 50 lbs., remote control, this was Audio Nirvana and vinyl found a match. This is now 15 years ago.
Since then I have upgraded cables, added a second pre and power, and bought a pair of Golden Ear Triton One speakers. I’m working on building systems to give to my kids to pass on the hobby. My system is not for them, but there is a journey to continue to find the system so they can discover music and high-end sound. I have now moved to Quboz. Bluesound player and a second SACD the Oppo 205. I am having so much fun and have joined the DC Hifi group.”
