My Audiophile Journey by Colleen McLane-Schwartz:
“Daddy wanted a son. I was the baby of the family and having another child was not in the cards. Luckily, he got a tomboy! He taught me how to solder, wire, install a picture tube in our television, test and change vacuum tubes. He took me to audio salons and gave me a love of music and appreciation of stereophonic sound. The rest is history…..
I began my personal audiophile journey in 1982 with my first equipment consisting of David Hafler DH-220 amplifier and DH-110 pre-amp and Polk SDA-2 speakers. Back then, many audio salons would allow customers to demo equipment at home. When I auditioned the Acoustat 2+2 electrostatic speakers there was no going back! Naturally, I needed to upgrade everything to accommodate the power requirements and unique sound of these speakers. So I picked up a pair of original Adcom GFA-555 amplifiers and the Audible Illusions Modulus 3 preamp. This system has evolved over the years with additions and subtractions of equipment to play source material, including an AR Turntable, Nakamichi Dragon; DBX-228; Revox B225 CD player; Wadia 171i Digital Transport and Oppo Sonica DAC. I have always considered this my reference system.
Since then I have created other systems for different rooms in my house.
In the family room, I recently picked up the Marantz SR-8012 Receiver which drives my full Polk LSI surround system combining LSI in-wall speakers with floor standing LSI-15’s on the front end and an SVS cylinder subwoofer. I utilize a Mac Mini (Lossless files) for my audio library but also have the Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD Blue Ray player; Apple TV and LG OLED display. I expanded this system for outdoor use utilizing two Parasound 2125 amplifiers, which drive eight Rockustic outdoor speakers in two zones.
I also developed a small system in my conservatory consisting of four Polk Audio LSI in-wall speakers and an SVS Subwoofer. For electronics I use a Marantz SR-8012 receiver, Essence DAC and Apple TV.
My bedroom system pays homage to the “classic audio” receivers I knew so well and only dreamed of ever owning. The centerpiece is a completely restored Marantz Model 2270 Receiver driving a pair of classic Polk RT-5 bookshelf speakers with a Cambridge DAC, and Roku Ultra 4K.
Currently, the only room in the house I have not addressed is my office. Winning the AirPulse A100 Active Wireless speakers is so exciting because it will bring awesome sound to a place I spend much time. Can’t wait to get my hands on these babies and give them a listen!”
