Fall Sweepstakes Winner Colleen McLane Schwartz’s snap review of the AirPulse A100s.
First Impressions: The overall construction fit and finish on these $799.99 a pair speakers is lovely. They are substantial in size. I like the exposed drivers, appreciated the speaker stands. On the back of the right speaker is a plethora of connection options and controls. I especially appreciated the Bass and Treble level adjustments. It’s obvious that these speakers are audiophile quality and much love and thought was put into their construction.
First Listen: I’m using my Apple IMac Retina 27” computer, ITunes with AIFF and FLAC files. I utilized the USB connection for my demo. Wow, these speakers have a really big full sound! They certainly move Air! They are also very articulate. Segments of recordings can be heard. Nice imaging. No distortion when listening at fairly high sound levels. I was pleasantly surprised! Vocals sounded natural especially for playing from computer. Usually they sound like the artist is singing with a mouthful of nickels!
Second Listen: Since these speakers have a subwoofer output port, I said “Why Not!” Grabbed my SVS SB-2000 sub and gave the system another whirl! Imaging on the speakers really opened up and the bottom end, in a word fantastic! With all of the available controls on the speakers and addition of the subwoofer one can really dial in the sound quite nicely.
Conclusion: The AirPulse A100’s are very versatile audiophile speakers. There’s a lot of technology in those cabinets with amplifier, DAC and a ton of connection and adjustment possibilities. They do an excellent job of filling a small/medium sized room with sound and even take it a step further with the addition of a quality subwoofer. They are great for users with limited space that just can’t setup a large audio system. They reveal the recorded layers of music. This is exciting for me because they have the potential to get novice listeners interested in high-end audio. They are also very satisfying for seasoned audiophiles. Congratulations Phil Jones on a job well done!
